John`s Recollections

El Valle has a small zoo & garden area where you are able to see many of the birds that are native to Panama. The walk thru the zoo (1-2 hours) is quite enjoyable, but take care if driving from town as the road is not the greatest (take a taxi). If most of your time is spent in Panama city then here is a spot to enjoy and see some of Panama`s plants and wildlife.

John`s Recollections

Ok, Ok! Who goes to Panama to see a Zoo. Very few, but the air was fresh and a mite bit cooler than Panama City. We, however, drove at least a quarter mile over a boulder paved path to visit. Not really my cup of tea, but when there the walk thru the park was actually not that bad. Besides it was cooler, and I am sure that the many parrots were very appreciative.
There are 55 species of birds, both exotic imports from Asia and Africa such as golden pheasants and white peacocks, as well as a few tropical species not seen in any zoo outside Panama. A good representation of endemic animals includes a white-faced capuchin and spider monkey, an ocelot and trigillo margay, and a couple of tapirs rescued from Manuel Noriega's home after the invasion.
