Route 19 - US Hwy 19
Pennsylvania to Florida with video clips

One of the major North/South arteries to drive to Florida

We all have that bucket list, and the drive south on Highway 19 is one of mine. Quite the journey so far.

Route 19
US Hwy 19

A most famous Highway that remains relatively the same over the past 80 years

Interactive Route 19, northern section Erie, Pennsylvania Route 19 - Meadville Area Drive Route 19 - Zelienople Downtown Drive Neville Island - Ohio River Driving Route 19 / Int 79 Route 19 Virginia drive West Virginia drive Route 19 West Virginia - New River Gorge Drive along with us in early December, 2013 for a look at the past history of many that drove this famous route to Florida. The route actually starts in Erie, PA but many joined along the way at various locations on their way down to St Petersburgh, FL. Here are the Northern States

1. Pennsylvania:
Several video clips driving along Route 19 from Erie to Pittsburgh. One in the
Meadville area and another in the small town of Zelienople . So many of these small towns can be driven through in minutes but each one gives a true feeling of community togetherness.
Entering Pittsburgh a conscious decision was made to Use Interstate 79 and bypass some very congested highways. A stop at Neville Island on the Ohio River, however did provide an adequate rest period.
2. West Virginia:
West Virginia is one of my favorite States to drive, however, one must like mountainous terrain. Several drives in the area include Interstate 79 (where Route 19 is always close by) in northern West Virginia and then in the Summersville area on Route 19 itself that links Interstate 79 & Interstate 77.
A highlight in the area is viewing one of longest suspension bridges in the world as it crosses the New River Gorge. The New River Gorge bridge allows for a brief rest stop at an excellent State Park.
3. Virginia:
In this area of Virginia it is quite mountainous however when travelling from Bluefield to Bristol, TN it is mostly on a two lane road (each way) on Route 19 that travels on the valley floors with mountains on the side. Actually when you reach Abington you can get on Interstate 81 to Bristol.

Interactive Route 19, northern section Smoky Mountain Drive along with us in early December, 2013 for a look at the past history of many that drove this famous route to Florida. The route actually starts in Erie, PA but many joined along the way at various locations on their way down to St Petersburgh, FL. Here are the Southern States

1. Tennessee:
Route 19 travels through Tenessee for a short distance yet provides several options. Route !9E takes an eastern path through Elizabethton and is generally thought to take a longer time to travel. I chose Route 19W which joined Interstate 26 at Johnston City. On the return trip I chose to use Int 26 to Interstate 81 and Abington for a much quicker time period.
2. North Carolina:
Back into the mountains and they are very noticable. From the Tenessee border to Ashville they are there, however Interstate 26 helped to make the drive enjoyable. Route 19 from Ashville is at times two lanes, however at many times in the
Smoky Mountain area it is back to one lane with many curves that greatly increased travel time.
Now as an option, on the return trip from Atlanta using Interstate 85, then onto Interstate 985 which continued on as Hwy 23 all the way to Interstate 40 heading into Ashville it was a very good trip with some tremendous scenery. Would recommend highly, unless it is your desire to see the Smoky Mountains.
3. Georgia:
4. Florida:
